Educators

OJEN provides many opportunities for educators to get involved in justice education initiatives. Volunteer teachers and educators participate on local OJEN committees and are key organizers for justice education activities for students, such as mock hearings and law symposia.

Teachers may choose to participate in professional development activities, such as the Teacher Law Institutes or Judge Shadowing Program, or learn more about a current legal issue by attending The Great Debate during Law Week.

Educators also play a crucial role in development and review of OJEN curriculum resources and other justice education materials. These include DVD resources with accompanying lesson plans, and Landmark Case packages on controversial or significant cases (featuring plain language summaries, worksheets and discussion questions). Teachers voluntarily review all OJEN materials to ensure that resources are age appropriate and link with the curriculum.

Teacher-developed innovations are frequently added to the OJEN website or distributed to interested Law and Civics teachers who have subscribed to the OJEN bi-weekly newsflash.

Ideas and suggestions from teachers set OJEN priorities for new curriculum resources or may instigate a new direction for OJEN programming. Some OJEN resources were developed after a teacher, using an OJEN document, suggested follow-up activities or handouts. Any ideas or activities that are shared with OJEN will be made broadly available in both French and English.
