Aboriginal Youth

OJEN has developed curriculum resources for discussing Aboriginal Law issues in the classroom, and offers Landmark Case packages on Aboriginal treaty rights and Métis Hunting Rights. In 2006, a Sentencing Symposium was held on Manitoulin Island, comparing sentencing principles for aboriginal and non-aboriginal offenders. OJEN’s Circuit Court Justice Education Program focuses on the facilitation of workshops for aboriginal youth attending school in remote, fly-in communities, and is intended to provide students attending school in communities without a permanent courthouse or slate of resident lawyers with similar justice education opportunities available to students in other Ontario communities. In 2007, two workshops took place at John C. Yesno Education Centre in Fort Hope, with others being planned for Summer Beaver, Attawapiskat, Webequie and Sandy Lake. In the upcoming months OJEN plans to expand programming across Ontario and will offer more curriculum resources on Aboriginal justice issues.
