Newcomer Youth

OJEN’s outreach to newcomer youth focuses on the development of curriculum resources and the facilitation of workshops which develop students’ understanding of the justice system, while providing an opportunity for positive first interactions with justice sector professionals and encouraging newcomer youth to engage actively in Canada’s justice system. Participating students receive law-related education on current legal issues in the areas such as criminal, employment, immigration and human rights law. Lawyer volunteers work with teachers to adapt and deliver these interactive small group workshops.

In 2007, three pilot workshops took place at Catholic Central High School in Windsor, Woodlands Secondary School in Mississauga and Central Peel Secondary School in Brampton. In the upcoming months OJEN plans to expand programming across Ontario and will offer more curriculum resources.
