Active Citizens: Youth Engagement on Social Justice Issues

Since 2007, the Ontario Justice Education Network (OJEN) has been delivering the Active Citizen workshop to engage high school students in social justice discussions and to encourage students to take an active role within their community.  Every year there have been a number of successful student-run social justice projects on issues ranging from youth violence and racial discrimination to the environment and international issues.

In 2012, this program will be available for use in classrooms and community organizations. We will be providing an Active Citizens package that allows students to explore various social justice issues, to narrow their focus, and to build an advocacy network. We also provide an action plan model which helps students to lead innovative social justice projects within their community.

Active Citizens may be implemented in the following formats:

  1. Social Justice Discussion (1-3 hour sessions)
  2. Social Justice Action Plan (5-10 hour sessions)
  3. Social Justice Research (10 hour sessions)
  4. Social Justice Independent Volunteer Opportunity (30 hours)
